***These are very difficult times for Maui. many people have lost their homes in the 2023 fires and the county is struggling economically.  In 2023 we made our home available to a family who lost their home in the fire in Lahaina and for 2024 we are pledging to give 100% of the profit from the rental of our house to The Hawaii Community Fund to support their work in helping Maui recover.  It’s important that people who are interested in renting a house in Maui understand the situation. We are a licensed short-term rental. This means that we must meet regulations about safety, respecting neighbors etc,. It also means that we pay short term rental transient accommodation tax to the state and county and the state’s highest rate of commercial property tax. These funds go to the state and county and much of it is used for housing and education. Many owners choose not to become licensed because they don’t want to pay the taxes. This takes much needed income away from the county and state. Where it is so badly needed. Unfortunately, the county has chosen not to enforce their regulations so hundreds of thousands of dollars are being pocketed by these unprincipled owners.
I urge anyone thinking of renting a vacation home in Maui, to please be sure that it is licensed and therefor taxes are being fairly paid. For the life of me, I can’t understand how someone with a house in Maui would need to steal from Maui County and from local families.

Biff Mithoefer, owner

Aloha! My name is Biff Mithoefer and my family has owned the Banana Plantation for close to 50 years. I’m a Yoga teacher (biffmithoeferyoga.com) and director of Jamtse Sponsorship Project. I’m presently trying to retire, but I don’t seem to be very good at it.
We were very fortunate to have been renting a house nearby when the owner of 588 decided to sell and move up country. We loved Stable Road and were enthusiastic windsurfers so the decision to buy the house wasn’t hard. At that time, our youngest son was 4 and this year when our family gathered in the house, my granddaughter and great grandson played on the beach just as my son did over 40 years ago. This is our family home which has been a part of our memories for 4 generations. Over the years we have rented our house to many families, and it’s been wonderful for us to welcome other families to our home. Being away from our everyday schedule and patterns is a time for families to make new memories and we’re glad that so many families have made so many happy memories here.
When we first bought the house, there were no fruit trees, and the south lawn was overgrown. Both my sons are organic gardeners, so one of the first things we did as the boys grew older was to begin to plant things. We began with bananas which grow well near the beach and continued with breadfruit (the big tree on the northwest of the property) then mangos, papaya, citrus, avocados, lilikoi’s, star fruit, kafir lime, sour sop, figs and so on. The latest planting was a red hibiscus my youngest granddaughter (who had her 9th birthday in Maui in 2024) planted in March 2024 while celebrating her 9th birthday.
